THE LANDING

BAY OF ISLANDS, NORTH ISLAND

Some of the world’s most spectacular coastal scenery is found in the Bay of Islands. A 400-hectare pocket of this unique landscape is home to The Landing, an exclusive rural retreat fringed with white-sand beaches. Best accessed by helicopter, four architect-designed residences and a sustainable vineyard are surrounded by contoured farmland, lush native bush, wetlands and sea views.

New Zealand’s wine story began in the Bay of Islands in 1819 when early missionaries planted the first vines – The Landing – and head winemaker Ben Byrne continues this pioneering spirit. The vineyard site was chosen for its microclimate, clay and sandstone soils, regular sea breeze and protection from prevailing winds. Positioned above Rangihoua Bay, the view isn’t so bad either.

Originally planted with Chardonnay and Syrah in 2007, the nine-hectare site also grows Merlot, Pinot Gris, Sangiovese, Malbec, Montepulciano and Cabernet Franc. All fruit from this boutique vineyard is pressed, fermented, barrel-aged and bottled onsite, and the wine cellar is a special place to enjoy what’s on offer. This elliptical stone tower, a commanding presence in the landscape, was designed by multi-award-winning practice Cheshire Architects, which also designed the villas.

For the wine buff, the Vineyard Villa is a must. As well as its soothing outlook to immaculate rows of vines, it also enjoys expansive views over a wetland valley and Wairoa Bay, where the glass walls of the home slide away behind stonework to transform the pavilion into an outdoor room. The Vineyard Villa sleeps six people in two equal-status king bedrooms and has a generous main suite.

Introducing The Landing Honey https://thelandingnz.com/2021/12/08/the-landing-honey/ Tue, 07 Dec 2021 22:44:33 +0000 https://thelandingnz.com/?p=6673 The post Introducing The Landing Honey appeared first on The Landing.

Up until recently our honey has only been available for our guests who stay at The Landing Residence to enjoy but it is now available to purchase on our website.

The Landing began planting native trees in 2000, with well over one million native plants and trees now planted. The majority of the trees planted for the honey production were Manuka and Kanuka which flower at different times of the year, allowing for the different honeys to be harvested separately.

There are also a wide variety of other plant species which creates a diverse pollen source for the bees and adds a rich flavour to the honey. As the native bush has matured the honey production has increased and there are now 20 hives.

The Landing Announces Vaccination Mandate https://thelandingnz.com/2021/10/21/the-landing-vaccination/ Thu, 21 Oct 2021 03:01:29 +0000 https://thelandingnz.com/?p=6627 The post The Landing Announces Vaccination Mandate appeared first on The Landing.

The Landing has announced a new vaccination policy to help protect guests and visitors from Covid-19.

The policy requires all guests and visitors at The Landing to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and to present proof of vaccination on arrival.

In addition, The Landing team members and all contractors working on the premises must be fully vaccinated to protect against the virus.

The new policy will become effective on November 1, 2021.

“Everything we do at The Landing is aimed at providing an unforgettable experience for our guests,” says Garth Solly, Director of Hospitality at Cooper and Company. “We know that vaccine mandates are the best way to protect our guests and our teams from Covid-19. Vaccinated people are much less likely to carry and spread the virus, so our new mandate minimises the risk of exposure for our guests, allowing them to enjoy a comfortable experience at this beautiful location.”

The Landing is a 1000-acre Bay of Islands heritage estate with a vineyard, a winery and four residences offering luxury holiday accommodation. It is owned by Cooper and Company, the organisation that has led the 20-year regeneration of Auckland’s Britomart precinct and also owns The Hotel Britomart, where the same vaccination policy applies.

“We hope that our stance will underline the importance of supporting our collective vaccination efforts as a country, and that many other accommodation providers will follow suit,”says Garth Solly, Director of Hospitality at Cooper and Company. “Vaccination against Covid-19 is a top global priority, and we think it is important for every organisation to do what it can to boost vaccination numbers and to ensure the safety of their teams and guests.”

The Landing’s introduction of vaccine mandates come after leading international hotels such as New York’s Public, Wythe Hotel and Equinox Hotel introduced similar policies.

“The pandemic is of course going to weigh on people’s travel decisions, so we want to ensure that New Zealanders – and international travellers, when they’re able to return – can feel The Landing is doing everything possible to ensure their safety and well-being,”says Garth Solly.

The Landing’s new vaccine mandate accompanies measures that are already in place to minimise the spread of Covid-19, including mask-wearing, social distancing, and robust cleaning and sterilisation practices in line with Qualmark’s Covid Clean protocols.

Although The Landing is already carbon-negative (absorbing more greenhouse gases than it creates), as part of the Toitū carbonzero programme its businesses have committed to reducing gross greenhouse gas emissions by moving to renewable energy, transitioning to electric vehicles and reducing waste to landfill over coming years.

The Landing, a 1000-acre coastal property in Northland, home to four luxury guest Residences and a boutique vineyard and winery, has received carbonzero certification through New Zealand’s leading certification body, Toitū Envirocare.

This makes The Landing the first luxury lodge in New Zealand to be certified carbonzero by Toitū Envirocare, with The Landing Wine vineyard and winery joining a small handful of other New Zealand winegrowers and wineries certified as carbonzero organisations.

Toitū’s carbonzero certification means a business has measured all activities that produce greenhouse gases each year (such as using electricity, using fossil fuels, or producing waste) to find the business’s total gross annual greenhouse emissions. These emissions can be offset by activities that reduce carbon emissions (such as planting trees) or through purchasing carbon credits to achieve net zero carbon emissions.

Significantly, The Landing achieved carbonzero status not by purchasing carbon credits, but because the native bushland on the property – which contains over 1.2 million native trees planted by The Landing team over the past 20 years – absorbs more carbon every year than all businesses operating at The Landing produce.

As well as being a carbon sink, the regenerated bushland is home to one of the most abundant populations of Northland brown kiwi in the country, along with many other native birds. The bushland on the property will continue to be regenerated by planting thousands of native saplings every year, increasing its capacity as a carbon sink over time.

“At The Landing, we are honoured to be kaitiaki of the unique natural landscape, native wildlife and cultural heritage that lie within this property,” says Peter Jones, director at The Landing. “All of these taonga have potential to be negatively affected by climate change, so we feel a sense of duty to protect them.”

“Achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 is a team effort involving everyone in New Zealand. We are committed to working with Toitū Envirocare to ensure we’re doing our part.”

The Landing is owned by Cooper and Company, which also owns the Britomart precinct and The Hotel Britomart. Both these businesses are also on a path towards Toitū Envirocare certification.
